L4L Update of Basic Principles Database

Over the last weeks, the database on the L4L website that contains documents that make reference to the Basic Principles on the role of Lawyers has been updated. Over fifty recent documents have been added to the Database.

The UN Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers provide a concise description of international norms relating to the key aspects of the right to independent counsel. The Basic Principles were unanimously adopted by the Eighth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders in Havana, Cuba on 7 September 1990.

In November 2011, Lawyers for Lawyers has decided to create this database, containing documents in which reference to the Basic Principles is made. Information relating to the Basic Principles of the Role of Lawyers is dispersed and often difficult to access. This database makes information on the Basic Principles more readily available and lawyers worldwide who most need the protection of the Basic Principles are enabled to review and use information on the Basic Principles more easily. Eventually this will lead to promotion of, increased use of and increased reference to the Basic Principles worldwide.
