Appeal Intigam Aliyev rejected

Azerbaijan

On 24 February 2016, the Azerbaijan Supreme Court rejected the appeal of human rights lawyer Intigam Aliyev. Aliyev himself did not attend the hearing. This was reported by the Human Rights House Network on their website.

Intigam Aliyev is currently serving seven and a half years in the Kurdakhany detention facility, located outside Baku. He was convicted in April 2015 on charges of “tax evasion”, “abuse of authority”, “illegal entrepreneurship”, and “misappropriation”. Aliyev denies all the charges and says they are politically motivated. His arrest and conviction appear to be related to his work. As a lawyer, he has submitted more than 200 applications to the European Court of Human Rights.

Intigam Aliyev health is quickly deteriorating, as he is not receiving adequate medical care in the Kurdakhany detention facility.

Lawyers for Lawyers has been campaigning for the release of Intigam Aliyev since his arrest in August 2014 and will continue to closely monitor his situation.
