Concerns over safety of legal professionals in Afghanistan
Lawyers for Lawyers is gravely concerned about the demise of the rule of law in Afghanistan and the situation of lawyers and all those working in the Afghan justice system, as the Taliban takes control of the Afghan government and society.
It has been reported that the situation of about the approximately 270 women judges and 170 women lawyers, is of special concern, since they are especially likely to be at risk.
Lawyers for Lawyers’ President Irma van den Berg said: “The current situation of lawyers and other legal professionals, especially women, is of the utmost concern to our organization. They should receive all the support possible”.
We call on the Dutch government and the international community to ensure the safety of all those who are reported to be at grave risk as a result of their work to uphold human rights and the rule of law, including lawyers.
