Suppression of Lawyers

Colombian lawyers who represent victims of human rights violations, particularly as a result of the armed conflict, and their families, often themselves become victims of threats.

Another problem for lawyers is that they are often stigmatised by politicians. Under the current President Juan Manuel Santos, who took office in August 2010, the current government promised that it will not stigmatise lawyers (or anyone else in the legal profession), regardless of the cases they take on or the clients they represent. However, the President has recently spoken out against members of the legal profession in a way that could potentially put them in danger and hinder them in the legitimate exercise of their profession. Lawyers for Lawyers will monitor the situation closely.

Legal profession in Colombia

Lawyers in Colombia are not united in a professional organisation: there is no Bar Association in Colombia (although legislation regarding the introduction of a Bar Association or similar body is being discussed).
