Lawyers for Lawyers, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) and the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI) are organizing an online international conference on the Attacks against Human Rights Lawyers in Zimbabwe, taking place on 21 September 2021 from 16:00 – 17:30 (CET).
The event will coincide with the launch of our report on the situation of lawyers in Zimbabwe. The report reflects on the worrisome trend of increased systematic arrests of a number of Zimbabwean lawyers, and restrictions that have been placed on them, since the beginning of 2020, impacting their freedom to carry out their profession.
The welcome remarks will be delivered by Sternford Moyo (President of the International Bar Association). During the first part of the conference we will present the report and hear the personal stories from Zimbabwean lawyers Beatrice Mtetwa and Alec Muchadehama. During the second part of the seminar we will focus on the role of the international community, and discuss how the international community supports Zimbabwean lawyers in addressing, preventing and protecting lawyers under attack and how this can be improved. Speakers for the second part include Kaajal Ramjathan-Keogh (Africa Regional Director at the International Commission of Jurists) and Diego García-Sayán (UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers).
The event will be moderated by Baroness Helena Kennedy (Director of IBAHRI).
