Ding Jiaxi, a Beijing-based rights lawyer, began his activism in 2010 by pushing for the right of migrant workers’ children to take college entrance exams at the location of their current residence rather than needing to return to a place of origin. He also has offered legal assistance and provided food to petitioners in Beijing.

Ding is one of the activists who has been caught up in the Crackdown on Peaceful Assembly, Association and Expression which began in March 2013. That spring activists loosely organized in a network called ‘The New Citizens Movement’ have organized a peacefull anti-corruption campaign demanding that more than 200 high-ranking Communist Party officals, including President Xi Jinping an Premier Li Keqiang, publicly disclose their financial wealth. This movement was also calling for the government to ratify the International Covenant on Civil and Political rights (ICCPR), which China signed in 1998.

On 18 April 2014 he was sentenced to a 3 year and 6 month prison sentence for ‘gathering a crowd to disrupt order of a public place’.
