On 10 October 2019 Lawyers for Lawyers attended the pre-session organized by UPR-Info on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Kazakhstan in Geneva. In March 2019 Lawyers for Lawyers submitted a UPR-report on the situation of lawyers in Kazakhstan.
During this session Lawyers for Lawyers called attention to the situation of lawyers in Kazakhstan, mainly focussing on the lack of effective guarantees for the proper functioning of the legal profession and the problems concerning the independence of the Bar Association with regard to the recently passed law. Lawyers for Lawyers spoke to the representatives of several of the Member States trying to make the worrisome situation of Kazakhstani lawyers part of their recommendations to Kazakhstan during the upcoming UPR in November.
