Arnon Nampa is a renowned Thai human rights lawyer and founding member of Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR). He has provided free legal assistance, including representation in litigation, to individuals in vulnerable situations, often on highly sensitive cases. He is a vocal advocate for political reforms, particularly concerning the Thai monarchy, and has defended many political activists and protesters.
In July 2024, following previous prosecutions, Nampa was sentenced to 4 years of detention under Thailand’s controversial lèse-majesté law, based on two Facebook posts published in 2021. This is the fourth time Arnon Nampa was convicted for royal insult convictions and his cumulative prison term is now more than 14 years. On top of this, Arnon Nampa faces ongoing disbarment proceedings before the Lawyers Council of Thailand for exercising his right to freedom of expression. Detained in Bangkok Remand Prison since 26 September 2023, he risks transfer to a high-security prison if convicted in one of the 26 pending lèse-majesté cases against him.
