Jiang Tianyong is één van de 18 Chinese advocaten die in april 2008 had aangeboden Tibetaanse monniken te verdedigen. Deze advocaten zijn door het lokale Bureau of Justice mondeling – nooit schriftelijk – gewaarschuwd hier niet bij betrokken te raken omdat anders de verlenging van hun advocatenlicentie in gevaar kwam.
