WHAT THEY SAY
“We believe it is very important that our lawyers are aware of the complex situations of colleagues abroad and can contribute to their support where possible. That is why we wholeheartedly support Lawyers for Lawyers. Because if we, lawyers from the Netherlands, do not support our colleagues at risk, who will?” - Albert Knigge, partner at Houthoff
“In October 2022, Louise Dortmond, lawyer at A&O, travelled to Diyarbakır in Turkey to attend a hearing with other observers from Lawyers for Lawyers in a case against eleven lawyers. It was a great relief that the lawyers were acquitted during the hearing. Unfortunately, there are many other colleague lawyers in other countries for whom threats and prosecutions are a reality. A&O therefore believes it is important to continue to support courageous colleagues abroad together with Lawyers for Lawyers.”
Hilde van der BaanGlobal Pro Bono and Community Investment Partner
“The important work of Lawyers for Lawyers makes it clear that in the Netherlands, we are in a privileged position, which we do not always appreciate. We feel it is our moral obligation to support our colleague lawyers, wherever they are in the world, who are threatened and prosecuted because of their work. That is why we are wholeheartedly a partner of Lawyers for Lawyers.”
Pauline Sick, Managing partner Boontje Advocaten & Mediators
“‘Access to justice’ is a human right. Everyone has the right to accessible legal advice, to a functioning legal system. This also touches the core of who we are as NautaDutilh. As a law firm, we are in a unique position to promote fairer access to justice and to make a difference for individuals and organisations all over the world. Together we are stronger. In a world where the ‘winds of change’ do not reach everywhere, it is essential to work together with organisations such as Lawyers for Lawyers.”

Bold ambitions and impactful goals
Our ambition: Every lawyer should be able to practice their profession freely and independently. To provide people with the legal representation they are entitled to. To uphold the rule of law, and to protect human rights. Yet, worldwide, lawyers face mounting pressure — opposition, threats, even imprisonment. A strong legal profession is the backbone of a functioning rule of law, uniting us all. And it is worth defending. Lawyers for Lawyers supports lawyers worldwide who are threatened because of their work. For nearly 40 years, we’ve stood by at-risk lawyers globally, with steadfast support from our partners, law firms in the Netherlands and beyond. Join us and become a partner today!

Partner law firms support the work of Lawyers for Lawyers to promote the independence of the legal profession and uphold the rule of law.
They do so in the following ways:
- Partners support Lawyers for Lawyers with a fixed financial contribution, depending on the size of the firm, for a minimum period of 3 years;
- The partners are mentioned on the website and in the annual report;
- Partners receive exclusive invitations to Lawyers for Lawyers events;
- Partners receive invitations for low-threshold Lawyers for Lawyers actions, such as sending greeting cards, social media actions and petitions;
- Partners can communicate about their partnership with Lawyers for Lawyers
- Upon request, Lawyers for Lawyers organises a meeting for the partner firm, if possible with one of the lawyers for whom we work;
- By agreement: putting out certain Lawyers for Lawyers projects among partner office staff.
As a partner firm of L4L, you make an impact through:
- Legal research and advocacy projects to highlight and report on violations of lawyers' rights. For example, one of our partner firms conducted research into the situation of lawyers who assist clients who belong to the LGBTI community as part of our 'Access to Justice' campaign.
- Providing training and exchanging knowledge and legal expertise with lawyers from other countries. For example, lawyers from various partner firms shared their experiences and expertise about their legal field during a roundtable session with young lawyers from North Africa.
- Participating in urgent actions for lawyers at risk, such as writing letters, statements or articles. For example, several lawyers from partner firms went on a trip with Lawyers for Lawyers to observe hearings in cases against lawyers.
- Contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals 16 and 17 of the United Nations. An end to poverty, inequality, injustice and climate change. This is the core of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the period 2015-2030.
