Sudan Adam Sharief released from prison
Adam Sharief, a lawyer from Sudan, was released on 30 October 2013 after being held in custody for more than one month without charges. He safely returned to his family and colleagues.
On 26 September 2013 the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) arrested Adam Sharief. He was arrested without a charge and wasn’t granted access to a lawyer.
Six days prior to his arrest, Sharief was interviewed by independent radio station Radio Dabanga. In this interview he criticised the Governor of South Darfur for the lack of security in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur. This in connection to the protests that broke out in Nyala on 18 September 2013 after Ismail Ibrahim Wadi, a prominent local businessman and president of the local football team, his son and nephew were killed. He also criticised the use of live ammunition by security forces to disperse demonstrators that gathered together on Ismail Ibrahim Wadi’s funeral on 19 September 2013. According to reports, at least five persons were killed by live fire during the demonstration and at least 48 persons were seriously injured, requiring hospital treatment.
L4L called upon the Sudanese authorities to either charge Adam Sharief with a recognisable offence or release him immediately.
L4L is happy with the release of Adam Sharief, but will continue to monitor his case closely.
