China L4L en Amnesty sturen brief aan Rosenthal om Guangcheng

Op 7 mei 2012 hebben Lawyers for Lawyers en Amnesty International een brief aan demissionair minister van Buitenlandse Zaken Rosenthal gestuurd, waarin zij aandacht vragen voor de situatie van Chen Guangcheng. De organisaties spreken uit grote zorgen te hebben over de waarde van de toezeggingen die de Chinese autoriteiten aan Guangcheng hebben gedaan, namelijk dat ze zijn veiligheid in China zullen garanderen en dat hij een visum mag aanvragen voor studeren in het buitenland. Ook zijn er zorgen over de behandeling van familieleden en bevriende activisten van Chen Guangcheng.

L4L en Amnesty verzoeken de Nederlandse regering bij de Chinese regering aan te dringen op het nakomen van de gedane toezeggingen, een onderzoek naar beschuldigingen dat Chen Guangcheng in gevangenschap is gemarteld en dat hij en zijn echtgenote tijdens hun illegale huisarrest zijn mishandeld en effectieve maatregelen om te garanderen dat mensenrechtenverdedigers hun vreedzame activiteiten in vrijheid en ongehinderd kunnen uitoefenen.

De blinde Chinese mensenrechtenadvocaat ontsnapte op 22 april 2012 uit zijn zwaarbewaakte huis, waar hij sinds zijn vrijlating uit de gevangenis in september 2010 onder huisarrest stond. Na zijn ontsnapping verbleef hij zes dagen op de Amerikaanse ambassade in Peking. Nadat de autoriteiten hadden toegezegd zijn veiligheid te garanderen, verliet hij de ambassade en gaf hij aan in China te willen blijven. Een dag later is hij daar op teruggekomen omdat hij toch vreest voor de veiligheid van zijn familie.
