Tunesië Mohamed Abbou mag weer vrij reizen naar het buitenland

Op 28 maart 2009 werd Mohamed Abbou door het Tunesische Ministerie van Justitie en Mensenrechten meegedeeld dat zijn reisverbod werd opgeheven. De Minister van Justitie heeft per brief aan de Minister van Binnenlandse Zaken laten weten dat voor Abbou geen reisbeperkingen gelden. Abbou werd in 2005 na een oneerlijk proces veroordeeld tot drieënhalf jaar gevangenisstraf wegens smaad. De werkelijke reden was volgens Abbou zelf en enkele mensenrechtenorganisaties dat Abbou zich inzette voor de vrijheid van meningsuiting in zijn land. Hoewel Mohamed Abbou in de zomer van 2007 werd vrijgelaten, werd hij sindsdien meerdere malen tegengehouden toen hij naar het buitenland wilde reizen. Onlangs kon daarom een ontmoeting tussen L4L en Abbou niet doorgaan. L4L, Amnesty International en andere ngo’s hebben regelmatig bij de Tunesische autoriteiten aandacht gevraagd voor de zaak Abbou.
