Advocaat Oleg Volchek veroordeeld

Lawyers for Lawyers is bezorgd over de veroordeling van advocaat Oleg Volchek. Wij hebben onze bezorgdheid in een brief overgebracht aan de Wit-Russische autoriteiten.

Oleg Volchek is een prominente mensenrechtenadvocaat en directeur van de organisatie Pravovaya Pomoshch Naseleniyu (Legal Aid to Population). Volchek maakt zich sterk voor de verdediging van politieke rechten en de strijd tegen de foltering en slechte omstandigheden in de Wit-Russische gevangenissen.

Volgens onze informatie werd Oleg Volchek beschuldigd van ‘deelname aan een illegaal massa-evenement’. Dat gebeurde nadat hij had deelgenomen aan een demonstratie op 17 februari 2017. Op 15 maart volgde nog een demonstratie. Tijdens deze vreedzame demonstraties riepen de deelnemers de autoriteiten op om presidentieel besluit nummer 3, dat betrekking heeft op de ‘Preventie van Sociale Afhankelijkheid’, in te trekken. De zitting in de zaak tegen Mr. Volchek vond plaats op 21 maart 2017 in Minsk. Oleg Volchek werd veroordeeld tot 13 dagen gevangenisstraf. Het vonnis tegen hem is bij verstek verleend.
