Gezamenlijke open brief aan President Sisi

In augustus dit jaar werden advocaten Mahienour el-Massry en Malek Adly vrijgelaten. Mahienour had haar 15 maanden gevangenisstraf uitgezeten; Malek werd vrijgelaten in afwachting van verder onderzoek in de zaak tegen hem. Beiden zijn nog onderwerp van aanklachten en strafrechtelijke onderzoeken, net als vele andere advocaten in Egypte. Lawyers for Lawyers blijft ernstig bezorgd over de situatie van de mensenrechten in Egypte, en de advocaten die werkzaam zijn in deze omgeving.

In een open brief aan president Sisi veroordeelt een grote coalitie van organisaties, waaronder Lawyers for Lawyers, de voortdurende arrestaties en detentie van advocaten en de intimidatie van mensenrechtenactivisten. De organisaties riepen op tot onmiddellijke actie van de Egyptische autoriteiten, waaronder de vrijlating van alle advocaten die worden vastgehouden in strijd met het internationaal recht.
