Gezamenlijk UPR-rapport

Op 24 maart 2016 hebben de International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) en Lawyers for Lawyers een gezamenlijk rapport ingediend voor de Universal Periodic Review van Zimbabwe.

In het rapport benadrukken de organisaties dat mensenrechtenverdedigers nog steeds het onderwerp zijn van intimidatie, geweld, willekeurige arrestaties en vervolging. Advocaten lopen ook risico. Zij die mensenrechten zaken behandelen en mensenrechten promoten zijn vaak het onderwerp van intimidatie. Er zijn meldingen van arrestaties, detentie en mishandeling van advocaten; zij worden vaak geïdentificeerd met hun cliënt. Onder hen zijn advocaat Beatrice Mtetwa, die werd gearresteerd en beschuldigd van obstructie van de rechtsgang in 2013, en advocaat Kennedy Masiye, die fysiek werd aangevallen door de politie toen hij probeerde in te grijpen bij de mishandeling van journalist Itai Dzamara. Masiye raakte gewond en hield onder meer een gebroken arm over aan de mishandeling.
